When I first moved to Munich in 1971, there was only a two lane road leading past Perlacher Forst to McGraw Kaserne. The highway was all built in the early 70s. You are correct, Mr. Akimoto can tell you...might even have some photos. The mustang was moved in two pieces from a location on the right side of the main road leading into McGraw. I believe there's a pedestrian overpass there now, so it was in the way. I have no clue why the mustang was there originally, but it obvious the right idea to put it in front of the idea how the elephant got there....

After spending many a late night painting it,I can tell you that it used to be a fountain. Water would be pumped up through one of its legs and the trunk would emit the water. During my senior year 1984, a few of us decided to try to count how many layers of paint was on it. It was well over 30 coats at that time.By the way it started out being copper/bronze. Why it was put there? Maybe Mr.Butler has the answer. Hey, Maybe Rob Foore can ask his "SPECIAL BUDDY" Zibby if he knows about the history.

Dave, it's kind of heartwarming to know that, even after all these years, I can still count on getting sh*t from you! That goes for everyone.

As for my 'special buddy', I haven't had any contact-- no wait, I have haven't been in touch-- er, dammit, I haven't talked to the guy since that day!

*sigh* I thought he was lost, and then the chance meeting... and gone again...

LOL Jeez, I'm just giving you all more ammo...

I remember that I took that Model UN Class of Zibby's. I was the only sophmore in the class and I think that Oscar Hoessl and I were the only guys in there with the likes of Michelle Mustico, Margaret Breen, Mona Sanders, etc. I think we were Democratic Kampuchea (Cambodia). I always think about Zibby and his "unusual characteristics" whenever I hear about Roberts Rules of Order.

Hey Toni and Billie,

If there ever was a trouble maker, it would have to be me. Just ask the class of 84.

As Foore as Zibby being Robs"Special Friend" I think that he was every MALE students "special Friend". wink, wink, know what I mean, know what I mean, wink wink

  OK, OK. Here's an elephant (just trying to stay on topic) for you guys. Although...we may be a bit 'too old' to recollect this event, I got wind of story that involved the elephant getting his trunk sawed off by a group of ah, Mr.Bill/David-like pranksters.

How anyone could disrespect that school icon is hard for an oldie like me to appreciate, but, I understand the perps were found out and had to have the old boy welded back together again. Must have been too much Vanilla Ice or something!!

I don't remember all the details but here is what I remember. The elephant was supposed to go to the elementary playground at the other end of the school. It was delivered to the high school by mistake. Before it could be corrected, the high school students adopted it. Several sit down protests had been launched to keep the elephant and the students finally won. It had been secretly painted at least once a year since then. Every 3 or 4 years the faculty picked some unlucky students to strip the paint (I was selected in 1970). Of course it was immediately repainted. I don't remember what year the elephant was actually delivered, if someone does, please post it here.

Post subject:  The Elephant lives!

I was in Munich in 1999. I drug my wife over to Perlacher...she really thought it was the highlight of our European vacation (HA!). When I got near the school and saw the elephant painted red white and blue I almost cried (well not really but I was very emotional). This world sure has changed a lot since 1979. The elephant to me is our only reminder that we were there and our dads were there for a reason. Someone needs to remind the Germans...I went back again to Germany last year. We didn't get a very warm reception. Hopefully they won't forget about how we kept them free after the war. Sorry for the political rant but damn!
