Reading about smacks, jocks, and freaks leaves me wondering what the heck I was. Not a jock obviously, and too much a womans libber to go for the cheerleading stuff. I do not recall what smacks were, but I was too goody two shoes to be a freak. Help, I think I am having an identity crises. So those who remember me tell me what was I???

Generally speaking, a "smack" was a good student. Somewhat like a nerd, but without the inherent social ineptitude, a smack could often be seen enduring a good-natured ribbing from his/her peers for being a teacher's pet.

Maybe I was a naive, but happy nerdy ,freaky.friend of some jocks? I think I might also have had a bit of smackeroo in me with out wanting it. Mr. Hendersen used to fuss over me. Mr. Akimoto took me under his wing in art class. I have always been greatful for his special attention.I continued to paint for years after. Oh well.... I hate being in a catagory anyway. Are highschools still like that today?

i hate to brag, but i don't think any school was like ours. we were exceptional. our groups mixed and meshed and you could be both a band geek and play sports. (right mark?) you could get good grades and still date a freak. you could get good grades and still be a freak. The one question we asked each other as we climbed off the volleyball bus saturday evening was, "are you taking the 7:40 s-bahn?" ok, it wasn't all a walk through the tulips, some kids wanted to make trouble for others, but by and large, we lived and let live a lot more than most teenage kids. me, i was somewhere down the middle of all lines, i got mediocre grades, played a little sports, played a little music, played a little with my pals. probably kinda like you.

JoJo, very well said! I agree with you. I know I tended towards the uber nerdy-smacky side of the equation (and my kids would still agree!!), but I had friends in all groups and generally felt like I could float between the 'labels' without too much concern.

There were times I was just plain uncomfortable no matter who I was yakking with...but that's probably as much just a teenage thing.
