Leonard Gruber Docherty Leonard Gruber Docherty, age 83 passed away on May 22, 2010 at Panorama City in Lacey, Wa.
Docherty was born in Centralia, WA to Benjamin J. and Amalia Gruber Docherty, July 26, 1926. He spent the first two years of his life in Rainier, WA and grew up in Yelm, WA, graduating from Yelm High School in 1944.
After high school he spent two years in the U.S. Navy and saw duty aboard a gasoline tanker which completed three missions to Okinawa when World War II ended.
He attended the University of Puget Sound where he was Sophomore Class president, graduating in 1950 with a B.A. and a B.E. In 1969 he earned his M.A. at the University of Oregon.
After teaching three years in Puyallup and three years in Tacoma, he taught for thirty years in U.S. Department of Defense high schools in Stuttgart and Munich, Germany. Returning to Yelm, he taught at South Puget Sound, Centralia, and Pierce Community Colleges for seven years.
In 1992, he married Billie Rust Murphy of Lakewood and Roy, who died in 2004. The couple traveled extensively to Japan, Europe and made four major bicycle trips.
Survivors include his late sister's three children, Nancy Wilson (John) Fite, Vancouver, WA, Susan Wilson (James) Norland, Klamath Falls, OR, and John Docherty (Amanda) Wilson, Seabeck, WA.
At his request there will be no funeral, but memorials may be made in his name to the Alzheimer's Association of Western Washington, 100 West Harrison St. North Tower Suite 200, Seattle, WA 98119.
