As a rule I call that "not really listening" and then, after the fact, "remembering what I want to remember" -- but I'm sure we all have our own different styles...

i've been accused of selective memory myself, but in fact i tend to remember the things i remember in precise and vivid detail. selective memory would be easier on the self image.
